Trayvon Martin Innocence Lost: The reason why the march for social and racial justice continues

Imagine you’re a mother of a vibrant, young teenage boy who wants to go to the store to get him some candy and something to drink. You say to yourself: “He has been a good boy this week and he deserves this treat that he ask me for”. So you go into your purse and get the money that he would need to purchase these things and send him on his way. You don’t think that this trip to the neighborhood’s corner store will be his last. All you can think about is rewarding your son’s good behavior with a treat. As 15 minutes goes by you start to think to yourself where is my son and why is he taking so long to get back from the store? Then you hear a knock on your front door you assume it’s your son who has finally came home and who has also apparently left his keys in the house. As you walk up to the door to open it for your son you are surprise to see the cops instead of your son. Then the cops start with the phrase that is every parent’s worst nightmare, which is: “Ma’am, something has happened to your son”. As they start to tell you, you start to wonder two things: what happened and is my son okay? The cops tell you that your son was followed by a man who is currently a neighborhood night watch person and this person got into a fight with your son. As the fight escalated the adult man pulled out a gun and shot and killed your son. We are so sorry for your loss!!! The last part of the account of what happened to your son rings in your head because part of you is hoping that the cops have the wrong family and any minute now your son will come walking through the front door. However, it is when you go to identify the body that the truth can no longer be denied! As you are living through a parent’s worst nightmare one thing is clear in your mind and that is to get justice for your baby! So you protested for a year in order to get the shooter arrested and get a trial only just to be let down when the verdict is read not guilty!!!! There is outrage all throughout the country and there are marches held in the African – American communities across the nation for your son’s honor. Even though you have achieved worldwide fame and brought attention to the social and racial injustice in the American justice system for those of different skin color. It still does not bring you son back nor does it ease the pain of his loss. If this story sounds familiar to you it is because this is a story that has been shared by many black mothers and women of black children since the founding of this country. However, most recently this story of social and racial injustice is being lived by a Ms. Tracy Martin the mother of Trayvon Martin.

Syria and the War on Chemical Warfare

Syria is known for being the country in which a sinful Saul is on his way to Damascus to persecute the Jews who recently joined the new faith called Christianity, only to be knocked down off of his horse by Jesus Christ, who transformed him from Saul into Paul. However, things have changed drastically in Syria over the past two millennia. Instead of being persecuted for joining a new religion, people today are being persecuted for wanting to have more freedom from their government. Unlike Saul, who was knocked off his horse by Jesus, the people in Damascus are being knocked off their horses by the use of chemical weapons, which left a question on everyone’s tongues and minds: who was going to stop the Assad regime?

The use of chemical weapons by the President Assad’s regime has made international headlines. It has left the international community with the daunting problem of how to resolve this issue with the least amount of bloodshed. In response to this crisis, there have been three courses of action: 1) the U.N. sent their investigators to investigate the claims of chemical weapons being used on the people of Syria, in particular the people of Damascus. However, when their investigators got there, they were shot at by what the Assad’s regime claims were terrorists; 2) The United States, France, and Great Britain decided to do a joint air strike to stop the Assad regime in using chemical weapons. Nonetheless, this ran into a problem, because neither the United States’ nor Great Britain’s people liked using military force so soon after coming out of Iraq! This delayed the United States using air strikes to stop Assad. President Obama has said he is willing to go it alone if the use of chemical weapons does not stop; 3) Russia has come up with the third and final option, which is Syria giving up all of its chemical weapons in exchange for wining a reprieve from U.S. military strikes. Russian’s President Vladimir Putin said, “The weapons plan will only succeed if Washington and its allies rule out military action” (Obama – sees- possible – breaththrough –Syria) http://news.yahoo.com/obama-sees-possible-breakthrough-syria-weapons-proposal-010203859.html. In response to this, the Foreign Minister of Syria, Malid al – Moualim, said, “Damascus was committed to the Russian initiative. We want to join the convention on prohibition of chemical weapons. We are ready to observe our obligations in accordance with the convention, including providing all information about these weapons.”(ibid)

In response to the Russian proposal, the United States Secretary of State John Kerry had this to say: “Washington believes that the proposal must be endorsed by the U.N. Security Council in order to have the confidence that this has the force it ought to have.” (ibid)

Even though the third option has not been approved by either the United States or the UN, let’s hope it is the one that they both pick and end up passing, because the alternative to this option is war, and no one wants another war!

Edwards Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Title IX

Washington, D.C.  – Representative Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement celebrating the 40th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, which falls on June 23.   Title IX was a historical, bipartisan achievement that led to enormous advances for America's women and girls – passed by a Democratic-led Congress, with the leadership of Rep. Patsy Mink (D-HI) and Sen. Birch Bayh (D-IN), and signed into law by President Richard Nixon.


"At a time when universities barred the admission of women and when female sport teams were scarce, Title IX marked a momentous step forward for women's equality in the classroom and on the playing field," said Rep. Edwards.  "In the 40 years since passage, Title IX has promoted equal access for women at all levels of education across the country."


Title IX is a standard that for 40 years has promoted equal opportunity for women in athletics and contributed to the athletic and educational achievement of hundreds of thousands of young women.  Since Title IX's passage, the number of girls who compete in high school sports has grown ten-fold – from fewer than 300,000 in 1972 to more than three million today.  Similarly, the number of young women who participate in college sports has grown six-fold – from fewer than 30,000 in 1972 to more than 190,000 today.


However, Title IX is not only about athletics.  It affects all areas of education.  Title IX has made it possible for women to pursue careers as lawyers, doctors, mechanics, and scientists.  It is important in bolstering equal access to educational opportunities in a full range of academic subjects, including science, technology, engineering, and math; and also ensuring an academic environment free of sex-based discrimination, including sexual harassment and violence.


"Title IX has made tremendous progress to root out gender discrimination and inequalities in athletics and education, but there is still a lot of work necessary to level the playing field between men and women throughout our society," added Rep. Edwards.  "We have seen repeated attempts in the 112^thCongress to limit women's rights. That is why I will continue to work with the President Obama and my Congressional colleagues to ensure that Title IX and the rights of all of America's women and girls are protected vigorously."

Edwards: Supreme Court's Decision to Uphold Citizens United Reaffirms Need for Constitutional Amendment

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released a statement today following the Supreme Court's decision to strike down Montana's state law to limit corporate campaign spending. The case, American Tradition Partnership v. Bullock, was a 5-4 decision that reaffirmed the ruling the court reached in Citizens United just two years ago.

"Today's Supreme Court ruling overturning Montana's limits on corporate campaign spending makes clear that a constitutional amendment is the only way to ensure that the American people, not corporations, are in charge of our elections and our democracy," said Congresswoman Edwards. "Since the disastrous Citizens United decision, we have seen an unprecedented amount of money from corporations and the super-wealthy flow into our political system, with experts estimating that $8 billion will be spent on the 2012 elections alone. This is unfair to ordinary citizens and unsustainable for a healthy democracy. We must act with speed and deliberation to stop this backdoor, anonymous corporate spending on our elections. The Supreme Court has closed the door to reasonable laws to regulate campaign financing--the constitutional amendment door is open and we owe it to the American people to walk through it."
